Web 2.0 backlinks get written off a lot faster than they deserve. Some SEOs treat them as dead weight from 2012. Others still lean on them heavily and never explain why. Neither answer is very useful if you're actually trying to decide whether to build them.

The truth sits in the middle. Web 2.0 backlinks still work, just not the way they used to, and not if you treat them as a shortcut. This guide covers which platforms are still worth using, how dofollow and nofollow status plays into it, a real list to work from, and the mistakes that waste most people's time on this tactic.

Do Web 2.0 Backlinks Still Work in 2026?

Yes, with a caveat.

A web 2.0 backlink is a link from a mini-site or profile you create on a larger, established platform, Medium, WordPress.com, Tumblr, and similar. Search engines don't treat these the way they did a decade ago. Mass-producing hundreds of thin, spun web 2.0 pages purely to pass link equity is a pattern search engines have gotten very good at spotting, and Google's Penguin update specifically targeted manipulative link schemes like this one.

That doesn't make the platforms themselves worthless. A real profile with genuine content on an established, high-authority site can still support a natural, diverse backlink profile, and can bring real referral traffic on its own. What changed isn't whether these platforms work, it's how much weight a low-effort version of one now carries. Used sparingly and done well, they still have a place. Used as your entire strategy, they won't move the needle the way they once did.

Dofollow or Nofollow? What to Expect

Link attribute policy varies by platform, and it changes over time as platforms update their own rules. Some web 2.0 sites pass full link equity by default. Others mark outbound links nofollow to manage spam. Check a platform's current linking policy before building on it rather than assuming, since this is exactly the kind of detail that goes stale fast.

Web 2.0 Platforms Worth Using in 2026

Below are real, established platforms still active today. Domain authority shifts constantly and link policies change by platform, so confirm current DA and link type before you rely on any of these.

Blogging and Publishing Platforms

Medium

DR: 94

Link Type: NoFollow

Organic Traffic: 25.5M

One of the largest publishing platforms available, strong for thought-leadership style content and building a genuine following alongside any SEO benefit.

Tip: write for the platform's actual audience first. A post that only exists to house a link reads as exactly that.

WordPress

DR: 95

Link Type: DoFollow

Organic Traffic: 20M

One of the most established free blogging platforms, with a large existing footprint and straightforward publishing.

Tip: use the free plan's custom pages to build out a small, real content hub rather than a single throwaway post.

Blogger

DR: 94

Link Type: DoFollow

Organic Traffic: 880K

Google's own blogging platform, simple to set up and typically indexes quickly given the association.

Tip: connect it to Google Search Console directly and request indexing rather than waiting.

Tumblr

DR: 94

Link Type: NoFollow

Organic Traffic: 3.7M

Strong for short-form, visual, or niche content, with an active internal discovery ecosystem.

Tip: works best for niches with genuine visual or community engagement, not straight text dumps.

Substack

DR: 94

Link Type: DoFollow

Organic Traffic: 9M

Built around newsletters rather than standalone blogs, useful if you actually want to build a recurring audience alongside a link.

Tip: only worth the setup if you intend to publish more than once. A single-issue newsletter looks exactly like what it is.

Profile and Portfolio Platforms

Google Sites

DR: 99

Link Type: DoFollow

Organic Traffic: 17M

Simple, free, and carries the trust of the Google ecosystem, though it's a basic site builder rather than a content platform.

Tip: best for a small, genuinely useful resource page, not a disguised link page.

Wix

DR: 95

Link Type: DoFollow

Organic Traffic: 4.5M

A full site builder with a free tier, more setup effort than a blog platform but more control over structure.

Tip: worth it only if you're building something you'd actually want a visitor to land on.

Weebly

DR: 94

Link Type: DoFollow

Organic Traffic: 238K

Similar positioning to Wix, straightforward setup with a free plan.

Tip: keep the site narrow and specific to one topic rather than a generic placeholder.

Professional and Niche Platforms

LinkedIn Articles

DR: 99

Link Type: NoFollow

Organic Traffic: 78M

Publishing directly through a LinkedIn profile, useful for professional services and B2B niches specifically.

Tip: works best when it reads like genuine professional commentary, not a placement.

Vocal Media

DR: 82

Link Type: NoFollow

Organic Traffic: 992K

A publishing platform organized around themed communities, a reasonable fit for lifestyle and niche content.

Tip: pick the community that actually matches your topic rather than the biggest one.

How to Build Web 2.0 Backlinks the Right Way

Pick platforms relevant to your niche, not just the highest DA option available. Relevance matters more than the number.
Write real content, not a placeholder post that only exists to house a link. If you wouldn't want someone to actually read it, don't publish it.
Vary your anchor text naturally across platforms rather than repeating the same exact-match phrase everywhere.
Space it out. Building several of these in a single day looks nothing like organic activity.
Request indexing through Google Search Console once a platform allows it, rather than waiting for a crawl.
Keep the account active. A single post followed by permanent silence is a pattern search engines recognize.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Treating web 2.0 links as your entire strategy. They work best as a small, natural part of a diverse profile, not the whole plan. See our full breakdown of backlink types for where these fit relative to editorial links, guest posts, and niche edits.
Publishing thin or spun content. This is the fastest way to make a web 2.0 property worthless.
Over-optimizing anchor text. Exact-match anchors repeated across dozens of profiles is a clear manipulation signal.
Ignoring the platform's actual audience. A web 2.0 property nobody would ever read organically isn't earning anything, it's just sitting there.
Abandoning the account immediately after linking. Inactive, single-post profiles are easy to spot and easy to discount.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a web 2.0 backlink?

A web 2.0 backlink comes from a mini-site, blog, or profile you create on a larger, established platform like Medium, WordPress.com, or Blogger, with a link back to your own site.

Is web 2.0 still relevant?

Yes, but with real limits. The platforms themselves are still active and legitimate. What's changed is how much weight search engines give to a low-effort, mass-produced version of one. Used sparingly with genuine content, they still have a place in a natural backlink profile.

How do you make web 2.0 backlinks?

Sign up on a relevant, established platform, publish genuine content related to your niche, include a natural link back to your site, and keep the account active over time rather than abandoning it after one post.

What is web 2.0 in SEO?

It refers to backlinks earned through user-generated content platforms rather than through outreach or editorial placement. It's one of several backlink types, generally considered lower priority today than editorial links, guest posts, or niche edits, but still usable as part of a diverse profile.

Where This Fits in Your Link Building Strategy

Web 2.0 backlinks are a supporting player, not a foundation. If you're building a real link building plan, start with the types that carry the most weight, editorial links, guest posts, and niche edits, and use web 2.0 platforms sparingly to round out a natural profile. Explore our guest post marketplace and niche edit service if you're ready to build the higher-priority types.
