Not every backlink pulls the same weight. A single link from a trusted industry publication can do more for your rankings than a hundred links from low-quality directories. The type of backlink, how it was earned, and where it sits on the page all decide how much SEO value it actually passes on.

This guide ranks the backlink types that matter most in 2026, from the ones worth prioritizing in almost any link building plan, down to the ones that carry real risk if you lean on them too heavily.

What Makes a Backlink Actually Count

Before ranking anything, it helps to know what separates a valuable backlink from a wasted one. A backlink is more likely to help your rankings when:

It comes from a site with real authority and organic traffic, not just a high domain rating number.
It sits within relevant content, not bolted onto an unrelated page.
The anchor text reads naturally and describes the linked page accurately.
It's a dofollow link, though a healthy link profile still needs some nofollow links mixed in.
It was earned because the content deserved it, not placed purely to manipulate rankings.

Keep these checks in mind as you go through the list below. They explain why some backlink types rank higher than others, even when both are technically real, live links.

Key Takeaways

Editorial backlinks are placed naturally by another site's author because your content earned it. The single most valuable type.
Guest post backlinks come from articles you write for another site's blog, usually placed in the body or author bio.
Niche edit / contextual backlinks are added into existing, already-ranking content on another site.
Digital PR / news backlinks come from press coverage, data studies, or expert commentary picked up by journalists.
Directory backlinks come from business listings and industry directories.
Broken link backlinks replace a dead link on another site with a link to your equivalent, working page.
Image backlinks are earned when another site credits or links to an image, infographic, or photo you created.
Podcast and webinar backlinks come from appearing as a guest or speaker, usually linked in show notes or a bio.
Forum backlinks are links placed inside forum posts or replies, usually nofollow.
Comment backlinks are links left in a blog or website's comment section.
Web 2.0 backlinks come from content published on free platforms like Blogger or WordPress.com.
Social bookmarking backlinks come from saving or sharing a page on platforms like Reddit or Pinterest.
Footer backlinks sit in a site's footer, often as part of a service exchange or partnership.
PBN backlinks come from a private network of sites built specifically to pass link authority. High risk, not recommended.

Tier 1: The Types Worth Building First

1. Editorial Backlinks

An editorial backlink is a link another site adds naturally because your content genuinely helps their reader. Nobody asked for it, and nothing was exchanged for it. This is the type Google's own guidelines point to most often, and it's usually the hardest to fake, which is exactly why it carries the most weight.

Example: A finance blog publishes an original survey on remote work spending habits. A writer covering the same topic finds the data useful and links to it as a source.

How it's earned: Original research, detailed guides, and genuinely useful tools tend to earn these links over time. There's no outreach template that replaces having something worth citing.

Why it ranks first: It's the closest thing to a real vote of confidence a search engine can measure.

2. Guest Post Backlinks

A guest post backlink comes from an article you write and publish on someone else's site, usually with a link back to your own site in the body or author bio.

Example: An SEO consultant writes a guest article on a marketing blog covering a specific tactic, with a natural link back to a related resource on their own site.

How it's earned: Outreach to relevant, active blogs, a genuinely useful pitch, and content written for the host site's audience, not just for the link.

Why it ranks high: It combines referral traffic with a real editorial placement, as long as the host site is relevant and the content adds value beyond the link itself.

3. Niche Edit / Contextual Backlinks

A niche edit is a link added into an already-published, already-ranking article on someone else's site, rather than requiring a brand new post.

Example: A blog post from a couple of years ago about home office setups gets updated with a new sentence linking to a relevant product page.

How it's earned: Usually through a paid or negotiated placement with the site owner, since the content already exists and already ranks.

Why it ranks high: The host page already has traffic and authority built up, so the link inherits some of that immediately instead of waiting for new content to rank.

See our niche edits service for more detail.

4. Digital PR and News Backlinks

These backlinks come from press coverage, expert commentary, or data-driven stories that journalists and publications pick up and cite.

Example: A company runs a small industry survey and pitches the results to relevant publications, who cover the findings and link to the original data.

How it's earned: A newsworthy angle, real data, or a strong expert quote, plus outreach to journalists or writers actively covering that beat.

Why it ranks high: These links often come from high-authority news and media sites, and they build brand visibility alongside SEO value.

Tier 2: Situational, But Legitimate

5. Directory Backlinks

A directory backlink comes from listing your business on an industry or general business directory.

Example: A local plumbing company lists itself on a home services directory alongside its service area and contact details.

How it's earned: Submitting to relevant, actively maintained directories rather than low-quality, spam-filled ones.

Why it's situational: Useful for local businesses and for building a naturally diverse link profile, but low impact if directories are your only strategy.

6. Broken Link Backlinks

This method involves finding a dead link on another site and reaching out to suggest your working, relevant page as a replacement.

Example: A resource page links to a guide that no longer exists. You point out the dead link and offer your own similar guide as a replacement.

How it's earned: Finding relevant broken links through backlink or crawling tools, then genuine, helpful outreach, not a mass template.

Why it's situational: Success rates with broken backlinks strategy is low and outreach-heavy. But, the links earned this way are often high quality since they replace content the site owner already valued.

7. Image Backlinks

An image backlink is earned when another site credits or links back to an image, infographic, or photo you created.

Example: A travel blog uses your original destination photo and credits your site with a linked photo caption.

How it's earned: Creating shareable visual content and making it easy for others to find and credit the source.

Why it's situational: Valuable for visibility, but image links generally carry less weight than a text link with surrounding context.

8. Podcast and Webinar Backlinks

These come from appearing as a guest speaker or interviewee, with a link typically placed in the show notes, description, or host bio.

Example: An SEO specialist appears on a marketing podcast, and the episode notes link to their site alongside their bio.

How it's earned: Pitching relevant podcasts and webinars in your industry and showing up with something genuinely useful to say.

Why it's situational: Good for referral traffic and credibility, though the SEO value depends heavily on whether the link is dofollow and where it's placed.

Tier 3: Lower Priority Today, Still Has Narrow Use Cases

9. Forum Backlinks

A forum backlink is placed inside a post or reply on a discussion forum or Q&A site.

Example: Someone answers a specific question in an industry forum thread and links to a relevant page on their site as further reading.

How it's earned: Genuine participation in relevant communities, answering real questions rather than dropping links.

Why it's lower priority: Most forum links are nofollow today, so the direct ranking impact is limited. Still useful for referral traffic and visibility in a specific niche.

10. Comment Backlinks

A comment backlink is left in the comment section of a blog post or article.

Example: Leaving a thoughtful, relevant comment on an industry blog post, with a link to a related resource where genuinely useful to the discussion.

How it's earned: Reading and engaging with real content, not posting generic comments purely to drop a link.

Why it's lower priority: Search engines treat these as low authority signals today, and most are nofollow by default. They can still bring a trickle of referral traffic if done thoughtfully and sparingly.

11. Web 2.0 Backlinks

A web 2.0 backlink comes from content published on a free publishing platform like Blogger or WordPress.com.

Example: Publishing a short article on a free blogging platform with a link back to your main site.

How it's earned: Creating an account on a free platform and publishing content, which requires no outreach or approval from anyone else.

Why it's lower priority: Because anyone can create these without earning anything, search engines give them limited weight today. Still occasionally useful for brand visibility or diversifying a link profile, best used sparingly.

12. Social Bookmarking Backlinks

These come from saving or sharing a page on social bookmarking or content discovery platforms like Reddit or Pinterest.

Example: A useful guide gets shared and upvoted on a relevant subreddit, bringing a link and referral clicks.

How it's earned: Sharing genuinely useful content on platforms where your audience already spends time.

Why it's lower priority: Almost always nofollow, so the main benefit is referral traffic and visibility rather than direct ranking impact.

13. Footer Backlinks

A footer backlink sits in a website's footer, often placed as part of a partnership, sponsorship, or service exchange.

Example: A web design agency asks for a small footer credit link on client sites they've built.

How it's earned: Usually negotiated as part of an existing business relationship rather than earned through content.

Why it's lower priority: Footer placement gets less visibility and less weight than an in-content link, and overusing this method can look unnatural.

Tier 4: High Risk

14. PBN Backlinks

A PBN (private blog network) backlink comes from a group of websites, often built or bought specifically to link back to one main site and pass authority.

Example: A collection of aging domains, each with a handful of pages, all linking back to the same target site.

How it's earned: Built and controlled directly by whoever owns the network, rather than earned through genuine content or outreach.

Why it's high risk: This directly violates Google's guidelines on manipulating search rankings. If discovered, it can lead to a manual penalty affecting the entire site, not just the offending links. Not recommended under any circumstances.

A Quick Note on Link Attributes

It is crucial for SEOs to learn about link attributes in SEO. Link attributes are Every backlink also carries an HTML attribute that tells search engines how to treat it: dofollow, nofollow, sponsored, or UGC. This sits separately from the backlink type itself. A guest post link and a comment link can both be nofollow, for instance, even though they're earned in completely different ways.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many types of backlinks are there in SEO?

There's no single fixed number. Most guides cover between 12 and 25 distinct types, depending on whether they're grouped by how the link was earned, its HTML attribute, or its placement on the page. This guide covers the 14 that matter most for a real link building strategy.

What is the most powerful type of backlink?

Editorial backlinks, links placed naturally by another site because your content earned it, are generally considered the most valuable, since they're the hardest to manufacture and the strongest signal of genuine authority.

Which types of backlinks are outdated today?

Web 2.0, comment, and forum backlinks still exist and still get built, but search engines give them far less weight than they did years ago. They're not spam by default, they just carry less authority than they used to, and they work best as a small part of a diverse profile rather than a primary strategy.

Are backlinks still relevant in 2026?

Yes. Backlinks remain one of the strongest signals search engines use to judge a page's authority and trustworthiness. What's changed is which types carry weight, quality and relevance now matter far more than raw volume.

Do you need every type of backlink, or just a few?

No single business needs all fourteen types. A natural link profile usually leans heavily on editorial, guest post, and niche edit or contextual links, with a smaller mix of the other types added over time for diversity.

Building a Backlink Profile That Actually Works

The types at the top of this list, editorial, guest post, and niche edit or contextual backlinks, do the most work for your rankings. The types further down still have a place in a natural, diverse profile, just not as the foundation of your strategy.
